Publié en avril 2011 ce livre est basé sur le constat que beaucoup d’étrangers qui possèdent par ailleurs un bon niveau de français éprouvent des difficultés de compréhension de la presse et du français idiomatique. Ces difficultés ne sont pas dues aux lacunes linguistiques à proprement parlé mais à un déficit en termes de connaissances culturelles de la langue ; « culturelle » étant utilisé ici dans son acception la plus large. Les dictionnaires bilingues classiques ne sont d’aucun secours dans ce sens.
Tout le spectre de la presse française a été analysé pendant trois ans ; Le Canard Enchaîné, Les Dossiers du Canard, Les Echos, L’Express, Le Figaro, Marianne, Le Monde, Le Nouvel Observateur, Le Point et Libération.

Technically, this book is supposed to t an aid for students of French who wish to understand cultural references when reading articles in newspapers and magazines – but in practice it is much more than this. It provides the English-speaking reader with an insight into the mindset of the French establishment. There are a total of 3 000 references, each of which is carefully explained and cross-referenced to other entries. Together they provide a chronicle of French life over the past 50 years. Across several years he (Mould) scoured the pages of a range of titles from Le Figaro to Le Canard Enchaîné and has come up with 3 000 words and phrases which can be essential to a full grasp of the text. ..I shall in future be reaching for this volume rather than just passing over what I might find obscure but believe is not essential to understanding.
